Foster Grandparents Program

The role of the Foster Grandparent at Dillard Academy is to provide tender loving care to children and to establish relationships to enhance the mental, physical, social, and emotional growth of children.  The Foster

Grandparents are considered valuable assets to Dillard Academy by parents, staff, and faculty due to the consistency of their attendance.

 

Duties of the Foster Grandparent include:

· Maintaining a one-on-one relationship with assigned children and assisting in  the implementation of daily activities outlined in the individualized education plan for assigned children with special needs.

· Working with children in teaching self-help skills such as lacing and tying shoes.

· Reinforcing or teaching communication skills such as talking, reading, recognizing names and following instructions.

· Engaging in social interaction with children such as acceptance of self, self-awareness, sharing and helping others, and interacting with peer groups.

· Working with children in teaching or reinforcing recreational skills such as; constructive use of toys, holding and grasping toys, groups games, using puzzles, blocks, peg boards, and color discrimination.

· Helping to build a positive self-image of the child by providing a personal, caring relationship.

· Assisting in documentation for Program for Impact.

 

Some of the characteristics that enhance a Foster Grandparents value to Dillard Academy are:

Each Foster Grandparent is under the supervision of the classroom teacher and under the guidance of the Volunteer Station Coordinator.
